Islip’s name traces back to the late 1600s, when the son of New York City Mayor Matthias Nicoll became a land patentee and named his estate after the family’s ancestral home in East Northamptonshire, England.
Originally a farming village, Islip evolved into a seasonal escape for wealthy families in the 19th century. Its scenic shoreline and connection to Fire Island made it a destination for boating, swimming, and fishing — traditions still alive today.
The hamlet boasts its own public bathing beach and a strong maritime history, including the origins of the world-famous Doxsee Clam Company. Today, Islip remains a vibrant waterfront community where elevator safety and performance are key to keeping both residents and visitors moving safely.
