The name “Central Islip” originated in 1842, when the Long Island Rail Road expanded eastward and opened the Suffolk County Station. That station became the region’s commercial hub, sparking housing development in the surrounding area and laying the groundwork for Central Islip’s growth.
In the 1990s, the hamlet began a significant resurgence — with new residential housing, retail centers, and public infrastructure developments. One of the town’s most notable landmarks is the Central Islip Federal Courthouse complex, which is among the largest federal courthouses in the country.
