Originally called West Middle Island, the hamlet of Centereach was more commonly known as “New Village” until the early 1900s. When it was discovered that another town in Upstate New York already had that name, the community renamed itself Centereach in 1916 — a coined term that represents the hamlet’s central location on Long Island, meaning literally “center reached.”
Since then, Centereach has grown from a quiet farming area into a fully developed suburban community. With a mix of single-family homes, commercial buildings, and growing infrastructure, the area continues to evolve.
