Hauppauge has a deep historical legacy, with some of the area’s earliest homes dating back to the 1700s. Originally a Methodist society, Hauppauge’s early community life was shaped by trustees like Timothy and Issac Wheeler of the Methodist Episcopal church. One of the oldest houses on record was located near the present-day Hauppauge Industrial Park, close to Motor Parkway.
The town was eventually divided between Islip and Smithtown along the now-known Townline Road. Today, Hauppauge is home to a large retired population, and its quiet neighborhoods are complemented by local parks, restaurants, and coffee shops.
